McLaren team manager Dave Ryan has been with the team since 1974 and has played a big role in turning McLaren into what it is today.

MICHELIN JOINS A1GP

Michelin is to become the exclusive tyre supplier to A1GP, beginning this autumn. The deal is for three years. The tyres have been tested on the new Ferrari-built cars and have clocked up 2500 miles of running in the hands of Andrea Bertolini, Patrick Friesacher and Marc Gene. The design of the tyres stem from technologies developed in F1.

THE GLOCK ACCIDENT

Timo Glock suffered a rear suspension failure at Hockenheim on Sunday and crashed heavily into the pitwall. The rearward impact had little in the way of deflection and so the driver took a lot of the force of the shunt.

QUALIFYING REPORT - LEWIS'S SMASH AND GRAB

Lewis Hamilton snatched pole position at the end of the qualifying session for the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim. The McLaren star edged out Felipe Massa by two-tenths of a second in the final seconds of the session, while his team-mate Heikki Kovalainen bounced up to third.

Yesterday Windshear Inc. held "a grand opening" for the world's first commercially available full-scale, single-belt, rolling road wind tunnel. This is located in Concord, North Carolina, in the heart of NASCAR country.

BMW SAUBER RUNS KERS SYSTEM

BMW Sauber conducted its first track tests of its Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) at the company's Miramas test track in France last week. The work was done with a F1.07 with Marko Asmer doing the driving.

HOW FORMULA 2 CAN WORK

There has been much doubt expressed about the FIA's plans to reintroduce Formula 2 racing. The criticism has centred on the fact that there will be no promotion, no television and the price is so low that teams believe that the chassis will not be very sophistocated.

NO CHANGE AT HONDA?

Honda's Ross Brawn says that he is not looking to change the driver line-up next year. Brawn says that Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello will stay on with the team in 2009 and that the team's priority is to build a better car to help the drivers produce results.

PEUGEOT SNOOPING AROUND F1?

Peugeot Sport's director of communication Jean-Claude Lefebvre appeared in the paddock at Hockenheim, saying that he was "on holiday". This was much the same answer he gave 15 years ago when he appeared in the paddock prior to Peugeot's entry into F1 as an engine supplier in 1994.

Jenson Button has signed up to compete in the Race of Champions event at Wembley stadium on December 14.

DPR BUILDS UP ITS BUSINESS

The demise of the Super Aguri F1 team has resulted in a number of engineers coming on to the market and the Dave Price Racing organisation has moved quickly to snap up Gerry Hughes, the former chief race engineer of the team. Price says that he now intends to develop an aerodynamic research consultancy, with the focus being on simulation technology and 7-post rig testing.

A BIG CHANGE IN THE BEER WORLD

The Belgian brewery firm InBev has acquired the US beer firm Anheuser-Busch for $52bn. The purchase creates the world's largest beer company. The new company, which will be the number one beer company in the world, will be called Anheuser-Busch-InBev and will control brands such as Stella Artois, Bass, Beck's, Boddingtons, Brahma, Labatt, Lowenbrau, Budweiser, Busch, Michelob and Rolling Rock.

F1 ON THE STREETS OF MOSCOW

Hundreds of thousands of Russians turned out on Sunday to see a street demonstration put on by Holland's Rotterdam Racing and featuring Formula 1 cars from Williams and Red Bull Racing.

AN INTERESTING SETTLEMENT

Ferrari and McLaren have announced that they are bringing to an end the various legal disputes between them. McLaren has agreed to pay Ferrari's legal costs arising from the actions, which relate to the spying scandals of 2007.

VOLKSWAGEN AND F1

Hans-Joachim Stuck, the man who is in charge of all Volkswagen group motorsport activities, has told the Austrian newspaper Vorarlberger Nachrichten that the Wolfsburg conglomerate will not be entering Formula 1 in the next three years.

GREAT NEWS FOR F1

With all the hullabaloo surrounding the British Grand Prix last week one event was rather overlooked, although it is worth a mention for its is very good news for the F1 world.

BERNARD CAHIER 1927-2008

Bernard Cahier, one of the leading photojournalists in the history of Formula 1 has died at the age of 81. Cahier began photographing F1 in 1952 and developed strong friendships ith many of the stars of the era, notably Juan Manuel Fangio, Stirling Moss, Graham Hill, Jim Clark, Phil Hill, Dan Gurney, Jackie Stewart and Emerson Fittipaldi. In 1968 he was one of the founders of the International Racing Press Association (IRPA) which began the process of organising the media in F1, the famous red IRP armband becoming the F1 press pass for many years.

NEWS OF THE WORLD LOSES STAR WITNESS

The leading witness for The News of the World in the case against Max Mosley has withdrawn from giving evidence because her "emotional and mental state was such that it would not be fair or reasonable to call her to give evidence".

GARRETT TO LEAVE WILLIAMS

Scott Garrett, the head of marketing at Williams, has resigned from the team and is to become chief executive and a shareholder in KHP, a sports marketing agency which is close to the Formula One group.

FRANCE GOES TO WOKING

Jim France, vice chairman of the board of directors and executive vice president of NASCAR and the chief executive officer of International Speedway Corporation, was a visitor to the McLaren technical centre in Woking, Surrey, to day. It is not clear what France was doing in Woking but it seems that he was impressed by what he saw.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE FORUM

With five months to go before the fourth annual Motor Sport Business Forum in Monaco the leading lights in the motor racing world have already signalled their intention to play a major role in this year's event.

PLANNING PERMISSION IN ENGLAND

Donington Park says it will be the home of the British Grand Prix by 2010, but there are many obstacles to be got over before that announcement becomes a reality.

ANOTHER IDEA FOR ST PETERSBURG

There has been talk of a Grand Prix in St Petersburg for some time, but thus far no deal has yet been agreed. It is thus interesting to hear that Valentina Matviyenko, the governor of St Petersburg, has told the Ekho Moskvy radio station that St Petersburg will bid for the 2020 Summer Olympics. She also said that if the city did not win the 2020 bid then it would bid again for 2024.

SUPER AGURI ASSETS ON SALE

The assets of the Super Aguri F1 team, will be sold in an online auction later this month. Auctioneers SHM Smith Hodgkinson have been instructed by administrators PKF to sell the assets between July 29 -31.

The British GP will be at Donington from 2010, at least according to a press release this morning from the FIA. The announcement says that a contract has been signed. There are a number of very odd aspects to the announcement, not least that it has been made by the FIA, which is not supposed to be involved in this sort of thing.

A MOMENT OF PEACE?

The last few months have seen a deal of stress and strain between Max Mosley and Bernie Ecclestone, although it has been very difficult towork out whether they were really at odds or whether they were (as usual) working together. Red Bull Racing has announced that Mark Webber will stay with the team until at least the end of the 2009 season.

MOSLEY TALKS RULES

Max Mosley has written to all the F1 teams with his latest ideas about the Formula 1 rules and, in keeping with his current policy of winning friends, he has "invited" the teams to come up with proposals for new rules, rather than telling them how things are going to be.

COULTHARD TO RETIRE

David Coulthard has announced his retirement from Formula 1 at the end of the season. The news is not a surprise.

A CELEBRATION OF NOTE

Motor Sport magazine celebrated its 1000th edition in London this week with a pary in its new offices in Chelsea. Motor Sport was founded in 1924 as the Brooklands Gazette, but changed its name two years later.

F1 KNOWLEDGE TO HELP DRAG RACERS

The death of Scott Kalitta, one of the stars of the National Hot Rod Association's (NHRA) biggests stars a week ago at Englishtown, New Jersey, has called for changes in safety measures in the sport and the NHRA is now looking at ways to improve its safety with the specific aims being to stop engine explosions, find better ways to employ parachutes, develop brakes to more effectively stop the cars and to examine better run-off areas and catch nets.

ANOTHER SLAP IN THE FACE FOR SILVERSTONE

Grand Prix racing is not a favourite of British politicians, although this was not always the case. Back in 1996, the soon-to-be Prime Minister Tony Blair attended the British GP as a guest of the FIA. There were six other MPs present at the event that year.

GURDJIAN CONCENTRATES ON ABU DHABI

Philippe Gurdjian, the man in charge of the Circuit Paul Ricard for the last nine years, is standing down from his role in order to concentrate on getting the Abu Dhabi F1 circuit finished in time for the Grand Prix at the end of next year.

PRIAULX TO DRIVE BMW SAUBER F1 AT BRANDS HATCH

Triple FIA World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx is to demonstrate a BMW Sauber F1 car at Brands Hatch on July 26-27 when the WTCC comes to Britain. Priaulx, who did occasional F1 tests with Williams-BMW in 2005 and 2006, will be racing as usual with Bart Mampaey's team from Mechelen in Belgium, which is competing this year as BMW Team UK.

SPORTING POWER IN INDIA.

Nazir Hoosein has long been a controversial figure in motorsport circles. The Indian was an FIA steward in F1 for many years and was responsible for some very controversial decisions, notably at Silverstone in 1998 after which he "voluntarily" handed in his steward's licence for a year.

The word in F1 circles is that GP2 frontrunner Bruno Senna is in talks to become the BMW Sauber test driver next season.

SOME MORE BACKGROUND TO THE MOSLEY SCANDAL

In recent weeks The Times has become the conduit for the thoughts of Bernie Ecclestone, while Max Mosley has generally kept quiet and said nothing, hoping that silence, coupled with some populist policies, will come across as presidential behaviour and help to rebuild his damaged image.

FRENCH GP A SUCCESS, FFSA GOES AHEAD

The General Assembly of the Federation Francaise du Sport Automobile (FFSA), the national sporting authority in France, and the promoter of the French GP, met today and having reviewed the results of this year's race, agreed that they would continue to promote the race at Magny-Cours in 2009.

BMW SAUBER RESTRUCTURES F1 TEAM

Willy Rampf, the Technical Director of the BMW Sauber F1 team, is to have a slight change of job at the end of the current season. From November 1 Rampf will become Technical Coordinator and will continue to be responsible for the vehicle concept and to lead the team at the race track, but his management of the manufacturing side of the operation is to be handed over to Walter Riedl (48), the current managing-director of the team.

ANALYSING THE WORLD COUNCIL

The FIA World Motorsport Council did not produce the fireworks that had been suggested might happen. However there are clear indications that Max Mosley is pushing ahead with his strategy to improve his historical reputation by creating the sport as it ought to be - rather than the sport he had fashioned before the scandal began.

BERNIE DENIES

Bernie Ecclestone has told The Times that he had nothing to do with the revelations about FIA President Max Mosley's sex life, as revealed in March by the News of the World.

INTERESTING TALK FROM THE MIDDLE EAST

It has been reported for some time that Mohammad Bin Sulayem, the UAE's representative at the FIA, was largely responsible for Max Mosley's recent victory in a vote of confidence by the FIA General Assembly. Bin Sulayem is now admitting what he did, telling the Gulf News that he organised 41 of Mosley's 103 votes.

FIA WANTS $755,000 FEES FROM EACH F1 TEAM

The FIA World Council will consider a proposal to make teams pay for various "services and equipment at every F1 race" and intends to add the cost to the entry fee.

Rubens Barrichello has dropped five places on the grid because of a gearbox change. The Honda driver will thus start last on the grid, having qualified 17th. This moves Giancarlo Fisichella, Adrian Sutil and Nico Rosberg up a place.

ROUEN TO BID FOR THE FRENCH GP

Rouen says it will bid for the French Grand Prix. The city held five French Grands Prix between 1952 and 1968 but continued to hold races on the Les Essarts road circuit until 1993.

MAGNY-COURS TO GET A FACELIFT

As we suggested yesterday, there is a project to be funded by the partners in the Magny-Cours circuit to upgrade the facility to meet the demands of the Formula One group.

A LICENCE TO PRINT MONEY?

There is talk of a drivers' strike ahead in Formula 1, but these things have never been successful in the past and are unlikely to be so in the future. Unity amongst racing drivers is a rare thing, indeed not all the current drivers are member of the Grand Prix Drivers' Association, and so there is even less pressure on them to conform.

INTERESTING GOINGS-ON IN FRANCE

The French News is an English language publication, produced in English for those who live in France, but prefer their mother tongue. This week it is reporting from Burgundy, the region in which Magny-Cours in located, that it has been agreed that $46m is to be pumped into keeping the French Grand Prix going for a few more years to come.

JARNO GOES TO CAMBRIDGE JUNCTION

Between Detroit and Chicago, in what they call the Irish Hills, is a settlement called Cambridge Junction, home of an old tavern where stagecoaches used to stop. It is this crossroads that led to the construction nearby of Michigan International Speedway in 1968, a two-mile high-banked oval which has long been one of the most challenging tracks in the United States, with a crowd capacity of around 80,000.

RENAULT AND TOSO PART WAYS

Renault announced the departure of Director of Aerodynamic Technology Dino Toso from the team today. Toso has spent the last eight years with the team working in the aerodynamics department.

There are stories doing the rounds in Europe that there might be a second Honda team again in F1 in 2009. This sounds rather unlikely given that Honda is still nursing the tips of its fingers, which were well heated by Super Aguri.

Last week Bernie Ecclestone seemed to be relatively conciliatory towards the FIA, but this week he is back on the attack again, banging on the drum of a breakaway Formula 1 series.

Audi Sport North America fought off a strong challenge from Peugeot Sport to win Audi's eighth win in nine years with Tom Kristenson winning his eighth Le Mans victory, Rinaldo Capello his third and Allan McNish his second.

GOVERNMENT SOURCE SAYS AUSTRALIAN GP DEAL DONE

Australian newspapers are reporting that a new deal has been done to keep the Australian GP in Melbourne until 2015. The deal is reportedly a verbal agreement at the moment but it is anticipated that it will be signed off shortly.

QUEENS RECOGNISES RACING CHAMPIONS

Queen Elizabeth II"s annual Birth Honours List in Britain has rewarded John Surtees, the former F1 World Champion and multiple motorcycle racing champion with the status of an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, Surtees won his title back in 1964 but has had to wait until the age of 74 for recognition. Surtees ran his own Formula 1 team and more recently ran the British team in the A1GP Series.

MELBOURNE EXTENDS F1 CONTRACT UNTIL 2015?

We are hearing rumours from Australia that the Australian GP contract with Melbourne has been extendede until 2015. This is great news for Australia as there had been fears that the race would fall victim to higher bids coming from elsewhere in Asia and the Middle East.

There have been a series of denials regarding rumours that there have been talks between CVC Capital Partners and News Corp about the possible sale of the Formula One group of companies.

DENNIS GETS A GONG

McLaren team boss Ron Dennis's contribution to engineering has led to the award of the Prince Philip Medal by the Royal Academy of Engineering. The gold medal is "awarded periodically to an engineer of any nationality who has made an exceptional contribution to engineering as a whole through practice, management or education".

DUTCHMAN GOES TO COURT

Dutch racing driver Giedo van der Garde has launched a legal action in Breda, Holland, against the Force India F1 team, aiming to recoup $3m which, he argues, was paid to the team in order to guarantee 6000km of testing. The deal was done when the Silverstone team was under previous ownership and was known as Spyker.

BUDGET-CAPPING ADVICE FOR THE FIA

Kelvin O'Reilly, the former boss of the Touring Car Entrants Group of Australia (TEGA) is in England this week to advise FIA consultant Tony Purnell about budget-capping.

Bernie Ecclestone has written to all the FIA club presidents saying that he wishes to clarify the current situation, blaming confusion on the media - a regular thing in F1 circles.

MONACO ON THE MOSKVA

For years Formula One has dreamed of hosting a race in Moscow, but a deal has never been done and event organiser Rotterdam Racing is going to beat the F1 circus to Russia in July with a display around the Kremlin on Sunday July 13. This will be the first foreign edition of Rotterdam Racing's concept, which has proven to be very successful in the Dutch city in recent years.

OVE ANDERSSON 1938-2008

It is with great regret that we must report the death of one of motorsport's most extraordinary characters Ove Andersson, a legend in the rallying world who went on to become the force behind Toyota's motorsport activities for more than 30 years. He was the Toyota F1 team principal until his retirement. He was 70 years of age.

TORO ROSSO - THE ULTIMATE SOLUTION?

There are reports that the British Formula 3 team Ultimate Motorsport is negotiating to buy a shareholding in Scuderia Toro Rosso, with funding for the project coming from the Angolan oil company Sonangol. Ultimate was formed in 2006 by Barry Walsh, a former racer.

FORTY YEARS OF WINNING FOR MCLAREN

Monday was the 40th anniversary of McLaren's first Grand Prix victory, although Bruce McLaren did win the non-championship Race of Champions prior to his victory at Spa on June 9 1968. Forty years on the team had little to celebrate at the Canadian Grand Prix, with Lewis Hamilton not only crashing out of the race but also being landed with a 10-place grid penalty that will hurt his race in France in two weeks.

QUALIFYING REPORT - LEWIS PLAYS MARBLES

Lewis Hamilton took pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix, finding his way around a crumbling track to record a time that was six-tenths of a second faster than his nearest rival. Six-tenths of a second in modern Formula 1 is a huge margin and the underlying story was clearly that Lewis had figured out something that the others had not worked out.

AFRICAN CLUBS OBJECT TO ECCLESTONE REMARKS

The aftermath of the FIA General Assembly has been fairly messy for the FIA, with a lot of negative criticism about the federation. This has not pleased all concerned and the FIA African Council, a new body that involves the clubs of the African continent, which grew out of the old Sub-Saharan African Touring and Automobile Clubs (SATAC), has written to the F1 Commercial Rights Holder Bernie Ecclestone complaining about remarks he made to Britain's Daily Express about what happened in Paris.

MOSLEY WINS VOTE - NOW WHAT?

Max Mosley has won a vote of confidence from the FIA General Assembly and the federation is waiting nervously to see the reaction to the decision. Mosley won by 103 votes to 55, with seven abstentions and four invalid votes.

EIGHTY-NINE TO WIN

The FIA General Assembly gathers today in Paris and it has emerged that there will be a total of 177 votes cast today in the confidence motion for Max Mosley. Nineteen of these votes will be by proxy.
